Well, I have never received any sign ups through social media but I have receive traffic. I think you can use social media for traffic but I don't think you can get sign up. They are different kind of users.

I use social media quite frequently to promote content within the communities I own or help to run and as much as it can help with traffic, I have yet to see genuine sign-ups to my communities that are not bots or people just looking for a place to spam.
