I have gone through so many phases where I would have a favourite forum software but then something new would come around and after using it, I would have a new favourite.
When I first started creating forums, phpBB was the first software I used and for a while that was my favourite, it wasn't until I had issues with adding mods when it used to be you would have to do a lot of template editing that I ended up choosing to move, this was back in 2004/2005 and I know that phpBB has changed a lot since then.
vBulletin became my favourite for a while after phpBB, that was until Xenforo was released and now, Xenforo is my favourite and has been for over a decade now. In terms of free software, MyBB would have to be my favourite.
